----------------- WHAT IS THE LABELER ----------------------
The Labeler is a self-contained label making program that can
make labels from any ASCII text file. It is a fast program that has
been tested on the IBM PCjr, IBM PC-XT, and the IBM PC-AT.
With The Labeler you can EDIT old labels, CREATE new labels,
and you can SAVE all your work to disk (or floppy) for later use.
The Labeler is written in Pascal with some external procedures
to make disk/floppy access easy.
---------------- BENEFITS OF THE LABELER -------------------
The Labeler will allow you to view a list (in order) of all your
labels. So while in the program you can see all of your labels listed
right on the screen.
The Labeler will also allow you to SORT or PRINT out any of your
labels using the label name or letters of.
The Labeler allows you to redefine the default spacing and copy
numbers. You may also take advantage of the label sheets that come
two (2) wide. Saves time and money...
The Labeler allows you to easily select your font, or change your font
on the go. The Labeler supports most dot matrix and thermal printers
and has an option that will test all the fonts for you. The Labeler
WILL NOT work on any LASER printer.
The Labeler has an option to erase old labels or delete all
labels on disk/floppy. All functions that can cause damage (mental
or physical) are confirmed prior to execution.
The labels used by The Labeler are ASCII. So you can enter labels
with EDLIN, QEDIT or to a ASCII file in Word Perfect or other programs
that allows writing to an ASCII (TXT) file. In Word Perfect select
CTRL-F5 and write the information to a file in the directory where your
Labeler program is located. Simply name the information xxx.LAB and when
you boot up The Labeler, your new label will be included into the sorting
list automatically.
-------------------- LOADING A LABEL ------------------------
At the start of the program you will be prompted for a name
of a label. If you have a mouse driver loaded The Labeler will detect it
and allow loading of any label by simply locating the mouse cursor over
the label and clicking the left button. The right button can be used as the
ESC key. The Labeler will always supply the suffix for you, so when you
enter the name you want, by keyboard, you simply type in the first part.
An example follows:
TO LOAD TYPE
TEST.LAB TEST
MOM.LAB MOM
Using the mouse you can load a label at anytime it's name is displayed
on the display list, even while Turning Pages. You can speed the label
loading process by almost 100% using the mouse instead of the keyboard.
If you type a name that does not exist the program will prompt
you for either entering another name, sorting, or to bypass this
area. Bypassing this area will put you into the main menu area.
If while entering a new label you make a mistake you can go back
to any line of your label and edit it. While entering your label
you will be automatically prompted for five (5) lines of text.
The program will check for characters and text length at the end
of each line. Once you have entered all five (5) lines you will
be sent back to the main menu. Editing is done easily and quickly
under the REDEFINE function.
-------------------- SAVING LABELS -------------------------
To save your work, go under the file area and select S to SAVE
your label. You will be prompted for a name (enter without .LAB)
and asked to confirm your name selection. If you are currently
working on a label the program will ask whether you would like to
save the current label with the last file (label) name in memory.
After saving your label the program will update the label
listing on the screen. At this point you will be sent back to
the menu. The Labeler will check for existing labels with the name
you choose, however The Labeler will not rename a label for you.
If you are working with a label you call MOM.LAB and select to save
it as FRED.LAB, then you will have a label called MOM and a label
called FRED. Also The labeler will not update the label list if you
save a label already contained on the list (saves time).
--------------------- EDITING A LABEL -----------------------
To edit a label enter the REDEFINE menu. You may select E to
edit your label. After pressing E you will be asked for a line
number. At this point a 0 (zero) will exit or a number 1-5 will
send you to that line of the label displayed in the label window.
After editing your label the program will not save it for you
automatically. You must either save your label now or when you
exit. You may, however, print or otherwise work on the edited
label. You will know the label has been edited by an asterisk that
will appear next to the file name (ie MOM.LAB *).
----------------------- SORTING LABELS ----------------------
To sort on any label enter the SORT menu. Under sort you can
do a standard sort (S), or a sort on any label (L). If you select
sorting on a label you will be prompted to enter as many letters as
possible to narrow the sort list for you. From this point anytime the
program sorts it will use your defined sort label. When re booted the
program will revert back to a standard sort.
To go back to the standard sorting order go under sorting
and select S. At this point the program is reset to the standard
sorting order.
------------------- DELETING LABELS ------------------------
To delete any (or all) labels created under The Labeler enter
to the FILE menu and select the option you wish. You will be asked
to give a name (for erase) and to confirm your action (for both). With
the mouse you can CLICK on a label name when asked for name to delete.
If you delete the label that you are working on you will still
retain it in memory and can save it with another name or the old
name with the save option or upon exiting. If you select DELETE ALL
labels you will be prompted to delete the one you are working on as
well...
------------------- PRINTING LABELS -----------------------
To print any label you enter the PRINT menu. You will be given
three (3) options; Print Label (current on display), Print Label List
(prints out a list of all labels that have the current sort parameter),
Print All Labels (this will print out each and every labels with the same
sort parameter). The difference between Print All and Print List is that
Print List simply prints out a list of the files, where Print All will
actually print out every label (this could take some time...). Both of
these functions follow the COPY NUMBER and SPACE NUMBER variables you set.
To print out all labels that start with HA, you have another
option that allows you to print FROM/TO any label. Under the option
PRINT ALL you select F for FROM/TO. Please understand that even if
you select PRINT ALL it will only print all labels that meet the current
sort parameter. The FROM/TO option works the same way. If you select print
FROM A TO Z, it will only print from A TO Z the labels on all pages with
the current sort parameter. If you have the sort set on DI and select to
Print From A to Z, you will print DI*. In other words, the sort parameter
will "OVERRIDE" the Print Parameters. This can be used to your advantage
and it can cause some problems, take some time and explore its use.
To use double wide (two (2) across labels) enter REDEFINE and
press the W (Width). You will see the center status window change to
reflect the new setting (Width: Two Column...). If using the double
feature you will be limited in your font selection. This is due to the
fact that you can not fit large text (double size text) across two labels.
The program will let you now when you are ready to print that you have
exceeded any line length for the font you have selected.
If you wish to change the font enter the REDEFINE menu and press
F (Font). The system will leaf through the selections and you can
change it on the fly (simply exit out of Printing and change the font then
re enter Printing). Using the large text is best for either long single
labels or on plain printing paper.
------------------- CLEANING THE SCREEN --------------------
If for some reason an error occurs (MOST are taken care of in
the software) and your screen is full of strange looking text, press
C from the MAIN menu for Clean screen. This will re-paint your
display for you, thus eliminating any unwanted text, error messages.
-------------------- TURNING THE PAGE ----------------------
Another helpful item is the function Turn Page. This is put
into the program to allow you to leaf back through the entire label
list after you have already entered the software. It will not re sort
but it will keep the previous sort and simply put you back (page by
page) through all labels on the disk. At any time ESC will break you
out of the listing. Also at any time you may load another label, while
its name is displayed on the screen.
------------------- HELP FROM SOFTWARE ---------------------
If you happen to forget any of the above items you can access
them under the MAIN menu (press H). You will get a complete listing
of all basic functions. Escape at any time will put you back into the
MAIN menu system.
------------------- THE MOUSE FUNCTIONS ---------------------
The mouse can be used do accomplish most tasks while inside The Labeler.
When answering question the left button is YES and the right button is NO.
At most other times the right button is used as an alternative to the ESCape
sequence. The left button is used at most other times to signify ENTER.
Control of the mouse is not accomplished through this software. You
must use the mouse driver software that accompanies your mouse to adjust the
sensitivity and clicking rate.
